May has left us in its dust, and we are well into the summer months. After taking a few Sundays to catch up with some of our current events, such as Graduate Sunday, I am getting prepared to take the leap into the Gospel of Mark. Starting on June 20 our sermons will travel the path of Jesus' life and ministry alongside the capable and accurate eyes of Mark.
John Mark was a friend and chronicler of Peter's ministry, and he recorded the tales and stories of Jesus that Peter spoke and preached about. He wanted to preserve them and present them in a light that would be easy to understand, for he believed the Gospel to be of the greatest importance. Thankfully Mark is descriptive and brief, a joy to read and easy to understand. The theology is still pointed and fairly deep at times, as Mark brings light and life to the Gospel as he addresses the Gentiles in and around Rome.
We begin with the very first verse--"The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." From there I will look into the successive parts of the narrative of Jesus' ministry as Mark lays it out. Each week will bring new stories and new insight. I pray that you will be inspired to join us on this journey. Some of this may be new and fresh, while some might just refresh your memories. Either way, the Gospel is the message of God's salvation through Jesus Christ, and it is powerful.
Please come and join us!
